The Monaco Grand Prix has been on the motorsport calendar since 1929, meaning that it is older than Formula One itself.

The grand prix is often considered as the ‘jewel of Formula One’. As a result of the prestigious label attached – it is widely considered as one of the most important and prestigious automobile races in the world.

However, despite being attributed with such accolades, there are suggestions that the track could soon be banished from the sport and be replaced with one which is newer, faster and pays more money than Monaco.

Stefano Domenicali, the Formula One CEO, mentioned to the press that “it is not enough to have pedigree anymore, you have to prove that you are keeping up”.

The statement from Domenicali suggests that classic tracks all run the risk of the axe should they not be able to prove that they are as entertaining or financially beneficial as other possible circuits.

Reports suggest that Monaco, along with the likes of Spa, Monza and Silverstone, all run the risk of being axed from the calendar - despite them all being the most storied circuits in the world - so that the sport can reach a wider demographic.

In light of the recent controversy surrounding such drastic action removing these tracks from the circuit the Monaco Automobile Club president, Michel Boeri, suggests that his track is here to stay.

Boeri suggested at a general meeting of his organisation that long, positive talks have taken place between his team and Liberty Media to ensure that Monaco remains an integral part of the Formula One schedule before mentioning that an agreement is seemingly very close to being reached.

In full, this is what Michel Boeri said at his organisation’s meeting.

"I want to talk about what has been written in the press

"People have talked about supposed difficulties after this year to stage Grand Prix races, with Liberty's price demands said to be too much for Monaco and that our GP would be no more.

"That is false. We are still in talks with them and now we have to make it concrete by signing a contract.

"I can guarantee that the Monaco Grand Prix will continue to take place after 2022

"I don't know if the contract will last three or five years, but that's just the detail."

How would you feel if the Monaco Grand Prix was removed from the calendar?
