McLaren has today announced that the 22-year-old British racing driver has committed his Formula One to the team until the end of 2025.
On the official McLaren website, Lando Norris offered his reaction to the announcement – saying that “teams are about people, and I love the people and feel at home at McLaren. I have grown up in this team and I am excited about the journey we are on. Last season was another great step, both in my career and the team’s performances”. Norris further went on to add how he has “huge confidence” and is “looking forward” to the future with his team.
Lando Norris, who recorded his highest ever World Drivers Championship finish in 2021, revealed that before he committed to McLaren he held talks with the likes of Red Bull Racing and Mercedes about a potential move away from the Woking-based team.
It is unclear whether the Englishman would have moved to either team at the end of 2022, or whether discussions were in regards to a potential move in a couple of seasons when the likes of Red Bull and Mercedes could lose Sergio Perez or Lewis Hamilton as they come to the end of their respective careers.
The fact that Norris has committed before any official driving in the new era of cars comes as a shock to many, but it re-establishes the faith that the driver has in his team to be able to provide him with a car that is good enough to battle for his first F1 race win.
