Ben Foster retired from football at the end of the 2021/22 season following Watford’s relegation from the Premier League. The 40-year-old spent the majority of the season transitioning into a presenter thanks to his YouTube channel ‘The Cycling GK’ and the various podcasts he hosts. However, on March 23 2023 the goalkeeper was roped back into the game by none other than Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney’s Wrexham AFC.

Ben Foster joined the club on a deal until the end of the season following injury to Rob Lainton and was tasked with just one thing – bring the north Welsh side back to the Football League for the first time in 15 years. After a dramatic 3-1 victory over Boreham Wood, Wrexham have clinched the National League title and a space in next season’s League Two. However, Foster’s contract is set to expire and it begs the question – what next?

No one knows for sure, not even Foster himself, but the goalkeeper has refused to rule out extending his stay at the now Football League club. Previously, when the goalkeeper was asked about his future, he said he “didn’t have a clue” but following Saturday’s promotion celebrations he teased he could stay just that little bit longer – “This club is different. It is very special”.
Prior to joining Wrexham, the goalkeeper has confirmed that Premier League club Newcastle United were in for him but he had no interest in joining as it was too far away from his family. However, following his dramatic penalty save versus Notts County earlier this month he mentioned how “Wrexham were the only club” he considered joining post-retirement.

"I was really happy having retired, but I would only come out of retirement for Wrexham - genuinely only for Wrexham. The reason why I came back is because I know the club and I do owe so much to them for what they did to me. They give me that springboard to start my career and show what I can do. And then I got the move to Man United off the back of my initial run here. So it's where it all started for me."
In his youth, Foster made 28 appearances for Wrexham, conceding 37 and keeping 9 clean sheets.
